Having said that, the book was a pretty good read. Christopher Banks was a detective who as a child, lived in Shanghai until his parents were kidnapped. He goes back to Shanghai as an adult to try and solve the mystery surrounding his parents. Along the way he meets Sarah who on the various occasions he meets her, she is either single, married or separated from one of her husbands. They feel an attraction towards each other but don't really do anything about it because she is either married or too aloof.
The author writes well (could I say otherwise about Kazuo Ishiguro?) and paints an interesting story. Other than my confusion about the title, the only thing that bothered me about this book was how pretentious Christopher Banks was. But maybe that was the author's whole idea for the character?
I would say if you haven't read any Ishiguro you probably shouldn't start with this one. Maybe start with the one he was famous for - Remains of the Day. Then come back and read this one. I unfortunately, started with this one - and was maybe expecting too much.
