Ari is the one who leaves the family for a year to find herself because she has never been able to get over the fact that her parents abandoned her when she was a baby.
The story is told by the Kong women chapter by chapter in each of their voices. Charlie is distraught because she and her daughter Ari aren't communicating. Meanwhile, Charlie's sister Leslie is always pestering Charlie about how she is allowing her child to be raised; so this causes strife between Charlie and Leslie. Then there is Gran, she tells everyone exactly how she feels and what she thinks and she doesn't care what anybody else has to say about it.
This was an engaging story and I enjoyed it because it really drew me in to the lives of the Kong women. This is the first novel for the author and I thought she did really well.
