This book describes his escape out of Burundi and eventually to the United States where he lived homeless in Central Park while he tried to make enough money to get back into college to continue his medical degree.
He eventually finds help from an ex-nun, who throws out a wide net to all of her friends and co-workers and anyone else she can call upon to help Deo. With her help Deo finds a home and a way back to college.
Kidder also spends a part of the book trying to help the reader understand the fighting that occurred between the Hutus and Tutsis which I felt came late in the book. I'd have preferred that this historical documentation had come at the beginning of the book rather than toward the end where he put it. However Kidder did do an excellent job of explaining the fighting and the wars between the two groups.
Deo is an amazing human being with a will to live like no one I've read about in a long time. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
