This story is told primarily from Chet Cash's viewpoint interspersed with scenes from Robbie's viewpoint or his mothers.
Chet is a serial abductor and he has killed the previous children when they've gotten too old. To the outside world, Chet is a normal person and even preaches the gospel as a guest preacher at nearby churches.
At home, he teaches Robbie (now named Gideon) that punishment can be quick and severe if Gideon doesn't do what he wants or if Chet doesn't like how Gideon acts. One of the horrible punishments is to be placed in a casket like box and left there for 12-24 hours. The casket has a panel that can be slid open to reveal the eyes, but most often the panel is left closed.
This story is a very interesting fly-on-the-wall view of a child molester. There is no redeeming value in Chet and throughout the story, you are rooting for Gideon to get away from Chet and back to his real family who still yearn for Robbie every day.
