The chapters alternate between Tan's life and Shento's life and are sometimes interspersed with the life of the woman that both Shento and Tan have fallen in love with. Unbeknownst to this woman is the fact that they are indeed brothers.
Shento grows up with hatred and revenge towards his father who denied his son's existence at a crucial point in Shento's life. Tan grows up with only love and reverence for the parents who raised him.
I really enjoyed this book because of the stark contrast in the two boy's lives. This comes through in how they choose to love and the decisions they make about their lives as they grow up.
