Lucky is happy though, he has is girlfriend Portia who is with him at all of the games and is a model. They are high school sweethearts and they love each other very much.
Delphine, Lucky's French mother has spent her life attending to every one of Lucky's needs and now that Lucky is out of the house she is desperate to find her own space and her own needs again.
Lucky's father Jinan is as much in love with Delphine today as he was the day he married her. Delphine feels smothered by Jinan and wishes to get away from him.
Zaki, who owns the corner shop and is also Jinan's Dad, lost the love of his life when he was about 19 and was left to raise Jinan on his own. Since then he has had a string of partners, but never anyone he loved as much as Jinan's mother. He is tired of tending to the corner shop and wants out.
The author tells us repeatedly that the great tragedies in life are that you will get what you want, and that you won't. This is the theme of the book and is shown in various ways throughout.
The great tragedy of this book was that the author felt that she must spell out the lesson of her book literally, not once, but many times throughout the book. It would have been much better if readers had been left to discover the lesson on their own.
