The house, called Laurelfield, is where Violet killed herself in the early 1900's. This suicide frames all of the stories about the house including an obligatory ghost of Violet.
After the death of Violet, the house was turned into an artist's colony and it stayed that way for 40-50 years. Eventually the artist's colony was disbanded and the family who owned the house took it back over. This is the beginning of the book.
While I enjoyed reading the book, it was a little on the light side. There wasn't a lot that made you really think, except maybe when you tried to figure out the inconsistencies in the book.
