Thus begins The Burning, a story of J.D. who comes to the downtown urban area once the riots start because he wants to be involved in said riots.
Ben is desperately searching for his son David. They live several miles from the riot zone but David, who is mentally retarded, has wandered off. Ben has looked everywhere and the only place left to look is the riot zone.
Arletha Mae is a young 16-year old mother on a run to the grocery store when she hears someone crying for help in an abandoned building. She meets up with Larry, the hurt policemen and vows that it is her responsibility to help him, even though it may be to her detriment.
All of these stories intertwine with each other and some of the characters even meet each other. It is a very interesting telling of some African American experiences.
