Having said that, the plot of the book was actually very good. Claire, a nurse in the 1940's is in Scotland with her husband and they visit a stone structure much like Stonehenge. When Claire touches one of the rocks, she is thrown back to the 1740's where she becomes involved with one of the Scottish clans. She is in immediate trouble because they think she is an English spy, despite her protestations.
In a desperate move to keep herself from being locked in prison, she agrees to marry one of the clansmen, Jamie, thereby effectively changing her from an English woman to a Scottish woman and thus protecting her from jail.
This story is about her marriage to Jamie and all of the trouble that Jamie and she get into as they learn to love each other. Claire also spends a good bit of time trying to escape from the clan so she can make it back to the stone formation - hoping that touching the stone again will get her back to her correct timeline.
Apparently this is the first book in a series of books about time travel - and if you are interested in the historical or science fiction aspects of this book, I'd say read it. You may get hooked enough to read the entire series. I personally won't be reading the rest of the series simply because of the romance angle of the novel. I don't want to read a whole bunch of other books that have pages and pages of sex. (Not that I am a prude - I think people should have all the sex they want - I just think it doesn't need to be spelled out in such detail.) Ick!
