A jinni is what we all grew up with in fairytales - a genii.
In this story, Chava, the golem, is brought to New York by boat from Europe. Her master died on the voyage over leaving her penniless and hearing the thoughts of everyone around her. She is spied on the street by a kindly old rabbi who recognizes her for what she is. The rabbi helps her find a job and works with her on how she should behave in public so no one will figure out she isn't human.
Ahmed is the jinni; he too was brought to New York - but in a bottle. A tinsmith was asked to fix the bottle and in cleaning it, he discovered the jinni. Ahmed is helped by the tinsmith - he is given a job, a place to stay and coaching on living with humans. Ahmed is bound to his human form by an iron bracelet on his wrist that he cannot remove.
Ahmed and Chava discover each other and become friends - what they don't realize is that there is something that binds them together. As they become friends they begin to piece together this mystery.
This book was well written and fun to read. This is not the first book I have read about a golem - Snow In August by Pete Hamill is an excellent book to read if you are interested.
