Ren was in the bio-containment unit at Scales a Tales, a bar that also prostituted women. And Toby was at the Anoo-Yoo Spa where she worked creating special facials and mud masks.
Both had to survive on what little supplies they had with them, and in the case of Ren, she couldn't get out of the bio-containment unit without the password so it was crucial that someone come along and help her soon.
The stories of Ren and Toby flash back and forth from the present time where the disease has already struck people down, and the time years before when they both lived with the Gardeners. The Gardeners were a group of political activists who also didn't believe in eating meat. The Gardeners believed that there would be a waterless flood that swept the world clean of human beings. They didn't know what this waterless flood would look like, but they knew a real flood wouldn't happen because after the flood in Noah's time, God had promised he would never send a flood again. The Gardeners taught lessons to their faithful about how to survive a waterless flood, how to grow fruits and vegetables and how to kill and eat meat if they were forced into it because of the waterless flood.
This book ties in characters from the first book, Oryx and Crake and talks about the people who helped Crake create the small group of new humans that now exist in the world after the disease has swept through. These new humans, called Crakers, amongst other oddities, forage for leaves and grasses to eat. They are very simple people, but are very curious about the world around them. Ren and Toby take the Crakers under their wings and try to keep them out of trouble.
