The story begins in 1909 with Oliver, the Dad and the three boys around the kitchen table. Oliver has found an ad in the newspaper for a job wanted position for a housekeeper and is thinking of hiring the person.
Thus begins the tale of how Rose and her brother Morrie came from Minneapolis to Montana to live. Rose dived into the upkeep of the house and Morrie picked up odd jobs around the area.
Paul and brother's Damon and Toby's lives centered on the exploits of school and childhood rivalries.
It isn't until a secret of Rose and Morrie's comes out that Paul and Damon must make a very adult decision that could change the lives of everyone around them.
This book is a lovely tale of how life was once lived. Boys rode horses to school and housekeepers didn't live in the houses of single men because it wasn't proper. Doig has a way of richly pacing the tale so that it marches to its own heart-warming beat. I highly recommend this book for all lovers of the past and for those that have hope for the future.
