Everything is pretty good for Violet until her mother is tricked onto a boat to San Francisco and leaves her daughter Violet in the hands of an unscrupulous man. This man immediately sells Violet to another courtesan house - one of lower quality than the one Violet's mother owned.
Violet is to be sold to the highest bidder for deflowering rights when she turns 15 and in the meantime she is schooled on how to become a courtesan.
This story is about Violet's time in the courtesan house and what happens when she leaves. As usual Amy Tan writes a fabulous tale and is another must read.
