Honor also works to help the runaway slaves despite the fact that her husband and in-laws, whom she is living with, forbade it. Her in-laws disapprove of Honor for several other things and this makes Honor's life with her mother and sister-in-laws very difficult.
Despite everything Honor continues to help the runaways and almost gets caught several times by Donavan, the slave-catcher. To complicate matters, Donovan's interest in Honor goes beyond just a friendship. Donovan is very unhappy that Honor is married and part of the reason he pursues her help with runaway slaves is that he wants to make trouble for her. He is surly and rude and Honor doesn't want anything to do with him despite the fact that she is attracted to him. As a good Quaker, she does remain faithful to her husband.
It isn't until things get really bad with her in-laws that Honor decides to make a drastic move. And that is all that I will say about this!
Author Chevalier did considerable research into the Quakers, their beliefs and their participation in the Underground Railway. An interesting side note about the story is that there is a lot of talk about quilts and making them. Honor's in-laws require that she come to the marriage with 12 quilts. Honor is constantly working on quilts through the entire book and it was interesting to hear about the patterns, having made my own quilt when I was growing up.
