"Elsewhere, crystalline salt patches sprawl gleaming like buckets of spilled paint, around which butterflies congregate by the dozens, feasting, gathering the minerals and nutrition that will help empower them to go back up onto the desert floor above, to aid in the pollination of so many of the desert plants and flowers, upon some of which the rhinos undoubtedly graze, so that from a far enough perspective, I suppose that a viewer could say that a butterfly is a rhino, or that a blossom is a rhino; and that a flooding, charging river of tumbling, clacking boulders and cobble, drying weeks later to the sheen of hard-baked saltpan, is a rhino."
Uh, what was that? A butterfly is a rhino? A river is a rhino? Sorry, I don't get it.
The 20 pages or so that Bass talked about a rhino hunt that he was on was really very interesting. Other than that, the pages preceding and following were just a bunch of claptrap designed to bore even the most ardent nature-lover to tears.
