Patrons of the religious organization check out books from Mr. Penumbra's bookstore - which are all encrypted and - and decrypt them to figure out a puzzle. Once they have figured out the puzzle, they can attain the next level in the religious organization.
After Clay, a smart clerk figures out the puzzle on his computer, Mr. Penumbra goes missing and the clerk decided that he must find Mr. Penumbra and save him.
Meanwhile, the ultimate mystery of the religious organization is that no one has ever been able to decrypt the founder's book. Clay gets a friend at Google to sponsor a project and try to decrypt the 15th century book, but all to no avail. All of the smart minds at Google fail to decrypt the book.
There is a faction in the religious organization that does not want the use of computers involved in solving the puzzle of their organization or the decryption of the founder's book- this all leads to some good villains in the book.
This was a fun novel to read because it was all about books - and that is what I am all about! It is definitely a very light novel and can be read without much investment of thought. But that is OK - not every book needs to make you think, right?
