This final book is about how the primary characters from each of the 2 previous books finally connect back together and how they live as a community in this world devoid of humans.
There are pigoons (pigs with human brain matter that makes them much, much smarter than the average pig) that they must come to terms with and learn to live along side of.
Then there are the Crakers - the new humans that Crake had developed to replace all of the humans he did away with. The Crakers have their own religion (though Crake tried to breed this out of them) and their own genesis story. The humans feel somewhat responsible for the Crakers as the Crakers are very naive and simplistic. So the humans and the Crakers have developed a living situation where they are all together - which of course leads to cross-breeding between the species.
Ultimately this is a tale of people trying to get along with other people and their environment. Atwood speaks to this humanity in all of us because - what are we humans doing all of the time if not trying to get along with other people and our environment around us?
