I love the way this book is told. At first it is told from the viewpoint of the young 12-year old son Danny. As Danny grows up he becomes a writer and the books he writes sometimes become the narrative of the the book you are reading.
Danny and his father Dominic change their names multiple times and try to blend into the landscape wherever they are currently hiding. However, Danny's books eventually rise to fame as does Danny and his nom de plume "Danny Angel". They eventually emigrate to Canada in hopes that the Constable that is hunting them down won't think to look for them their. They also believe that the Constable is not a lover of books and won't recognize Danny Angel as being the Danny Baciagalupo from so many years ago.
While on the run, one character from their Twisted River days remains a friend through all of the years - Ketchum. He is a friend to Dominic and a friend/father figure to Danny. Ketchum curses up a storm through the entire book (fair warning!) but is always there to take care of Danny and Dominic even if he isn't in the same town. In fact, he lives near Constable Carl and often warns the pair that they need to move on from where they are as the Constable is getting close.
In the end, Ketchum isn't there when the Constable finally catches up with Dominic and Danny, but this too: how Danny learns to live without his Father, Mother, Ketchum and his son (yet another part of the story!) is told from Danny Angel's stories and John Irving's book.
For me, Twisted River ends in a most satisfying way - with words that send shivers up your spine.
