All of Oates' stories are troubling. And a lot of them are about young women or young girls who are having trouble with the men in their lives. Although this by no means defines her writing.
In 'Last Days', a college boy with a messiah complex, murders his Rabbi. In 'Small Avalanches', a young girl, laughing, evades a middle aged lech intent on grabbing her. While in 'The Cousins' a young woman writes to a famous holocaust author and informs her that they are related.
If you like reading books that have an edge, then try this one out. Some of the stories will definitely leave you creeped out. Which is definitely a hallmark of her writing.
