He finds her house and ends up talking to Ava Rose's Aunt Holly Mae. Terence is subsequently invited in and thus begins his new life as a friend of the Renfrew family.
Soon he begins spending the charity's funds to support Ava Rose and her family. Terence and Ava Rose also become lovers despite the fact that Terence is married.
After many months of this relationship, Ava Rose spurns Terence and starts seeing another man. This leaves Terence distraught and despite many attempts he cannot seem to get back in Ava Rose's good graces. In one attempt to see her, he even gets beaten badly by her existing boyfriend. Terence meanwhile is seeing a pattern evolving with Ava Rose's past relationships: all of her previous boyfriends appear to be dead. Not wishing to die himself at the hand of Ava Rose's current boyfriend, he decides to leave Ava Rose alone. Until one day, she contacts him and beckons him back.
This book is actually written by Joyce Carol Oates. Rosamond Smith is one of her nom de plumes. As a Joyce Carol Oates fan, I really enjoyed the darkness of the story and the twists and turns of the plot. The ending left me kind of flat, but everything up to the last couple of paragraphs was a first rate story.
