Dr. Zhivago is the only doctor in the area and is conscripted (kidnapped) back into the army (of a political faction he doesn't agree with) where he is forced to work for a couple of years before he is finally able to sneak away.
By this time, his wife has gone back to Moscow with his daughter. All of the trains are shut down and the only way to get to Moscow is to walk hundreds of miles so he does.
This book was very hard to read because I don't know the Russian history of the time - nor the politics and this was a huge part of the book. Other than that though, the story was very engaging.
I would say if you are interested in reading the classics, then you should put this on your list to read. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother because of all of the Russian politics and history in this book.
