Sam Lense came to town ostensibly to research the history and lineage of the local Indians. However this was just a ruse to cover up his real research, which was to find out more information about his grandfather - the shop owner who was killed those many years ago. In his research he met Jolie and started dating her.
People soon realized that he was up to something and because the lynching was not something the town felt proud of, it upset quite a few people that he was digging up the old history. In a fishing outing with some of Jolie's family, a nearby hunter in the woods shot Sam and nearly killed him. Sam ended up going home to recuperate and never came back until 10 or so years later. This story takes place primarily during those 10 years after the shooting. Sam and Jolie finally meet up again and try to reconcile what happened all those years ago.
I really enjoyed this book. The story line was good and it talks about a time in American history that I definitely wanted to learn more about. Apparently this story is based on some real live events. You would probably enjoy this book if you like historical fiction and mysteries.
