This book is a historical fiction about Ernst Toller and other Germans who fought against Hitler's regime. This book is told from the perspective of Toller and Ruth Weseman, the wife of fictional character Hans Weseman who was a political journalist.
Toller, Ruth, Hans and Ruth's cousin Dora escape Germany right before the war. They escaped being thrown in concentration camps which at the time were all holding political prisoners. (They hadn't started holding Jewish people yet.) They live in London where as part of their visa rules, they must not do any political campaigning against foreign countries.
Despite this rule, they secretly carried on political campaigns against Hitler because they could see that fascism was not right for their country or its citizens. Through secret meetings we get a chance to see how the resistance performed and how they were able to impact the politics in both England and in Germany.
If you like historical fiction or WWII fiction, then this is a book for you. I recommend it because I learned something new and found it fascinating. Hopefully, you will too.
