This is when Mike becomes more than average -- he becomes a hero to the Grantville townsfolk as well as other people in the surrounding German countryside. In fact, he ends up being elected the president of the new United States - which in the beginning includes only Grantville. But Mike has big ideas - he wants to bring in the surrounding villages and incorporate them into the new US. And more than anything, he wants to keep the new US from the local marauders.
In what the author terms as a sunny book, this story is a wild romp through the 1600's mixing modern day technology with ancient technology. Mike and his army are able to beat the marauders because of modern day guns and are able to convince newcomers to the New US that things are better in the 21st century.
There are a few love stories mixed in with all of the war-faring -- with people from the 1600s getting together with the folks from the 21st century. These love stories and the non-stop wins in the fighting is what keep this book so cheerful. All the happiness can be a little unrealistic - but then the whole idea of this book is unrealistic. And if you can accept the premise that a town from modern times gets dumped into the 1600's then you should be able to except all the happy people!
