When Elspeth dies, she leaves her flat in London and all its belongings and her money to Valentina and Julia. There are only two stipulations: 1) The twins must live in the flat for 1 year before it becomes fully theirs, and 2) her sister Edie and husband are to never step into the flat.
Thus starts the intrigue of the story. Edie and Elspeth haven't spoken for 20 years and now that Elspeth is dead - they won't ever speak again.
It is up to the girls to find out what their Aunt Elspeth was like, why their mother and Aunt didn't talk to each other for 20 years and why their Aunt left all her earthy possessions to the twins.
Elspeth's partner Robert had his own flat in the same building so the twins become friends with him. They also become friends with Martin who is a hoarder, has severe OCD (frankly I don't see how the two can co-exist!) and agoraphobia. From these two people they learn a lot about Elspeth and the type of person she was.
This was a really good book. I'm not giving away two really big secrets about Elspeth and a final turn of events in the book that are kind of creepy. You'll have to read the book yourself to find out the whole story!
