Thigpen's adventure starts out at the laboratory as he is being introduced to some Bonobo apes who have learned to communicate through sign language and lexigrams. Amazed at the conversation he has with the Bonobos, he goes back to his hotel ready to write this story.
After Thigpen left some of the more virulent protesters outside of the laboratory bombed it leaving Dr. Isabel Duncan unconscious and bleeding. The apes were not harmed in the bombing, just thoroughly scared. However, what happened next was probably just as harmful as a bomb to the tight-knit family of scientists, caretakers and Bonobos: in the absence of Dr. Duncan, they were sold to a company who put the Bonobos on t.v. for everyone to watch. And watch they did. No one could get enough of the Bonobos and their daily activities, conversations and yes, sex.
Woven into this story is Thigpen's marriage, Dr. Duncan's dissolution of a longtime relationship and the necessary building blocks of new friendships and relationships that make this into a well-rounded book.
The restoration of the apes into their 'normal' environment becomes a heated race both for Dr. Duncan as one of the Bonobos is almost ready to give birth and for Thigpen as he holds the presses at the LA Weekly for the best story he's ever written - the real people behind the bombing of the laboratory.
