The hid everywhere on the zoo property including in the Zabinski's own home. They would send their son out with food to whichever zoo area currently held someone in hiding by telling him he needed to go 'Feed the pheasants', or go 'Feed the lions'.
Ian Zabinski was heavily involved with the underground army and wasn't around a lot, so the day to day running of the 'zoo' fell to Antonina. Nazis would stop by to see if there were any animals still left in the zoo, or would question her why she was still at the zoo if there were no more animals there. Every day was precarious and eventful with a myriad of people constantly in hiding. Thankfully, they never got caught.
This book was full of stories about the animals kept at the zoo prior to the war as well as some of the smaller animals that were still there after the war started. It is also full of the dangerous stories of what the Zabinskis went through to keep themselves and the Jews they were harboring safe.
